About the Kongsberg 8100295

The Kongsberg 8100295 is the RPMD, an RPM detection module for Kongsberg AutoChief propulsion control. Kongsberg documents it in its RPM detection datasheet 330212, which lists two part numbers: 8100289 (RPME) and 8100295 (RPMD). The module reads the RPM pick-ups mounted on the engine flywheel, scales and limit-checks each channel, raises an alarm on any irregularity and time-stamps alarms and events to the millisecond. It has a built-in self-test, relay outputs and a 24 V DC solenoid output, and reports to the rest of the system over two CAN ports.

What is the 8100295 used for?

The module is part of the main engine's speed measuring system. Kongsberg's AutoChief C20 datasheet describes an engine RPM detection system made of two independent systems with automatic change-over, and RPM indicators on the redundant CAN network. Kongsberg's RPM detection datasheet states that the governor receives the actual engine RPM from the RPM detection system over a direct RS-485 line, with the dual CAN lines as back-up, so a failed module affects speed control and needs a prompt replacement.
