About the Kongsberg BWU09

The Kongsberg BWU09 is the Bridge Wing Unit of the AutoChief C20 propulsion control system: the panel that lets the officer on the bridge wing command the main engine. It combines a 6.5-inch colour TFT display with an illuminated telegraph lever that has 11 positions, each with a clear notch. The display shows engine RPM, the RPM set point, start air, the bridge lever set point and command transfer, and indicates shut downs and slow downs, with push buttons to cancel them. The emergency stop switch is independent of the panel and wired straight to the main engine safety system. Kongsberg declared the AutoChief C20 system obsolete on 17 June 2025, with AutoChief 600 as the upgrade.

What is the BWU09 used for?

The BWU09 is fitted in a bridge wing console, under a lockable cover when the wing station is not in use. It communicates with the rest of the AutoChief C20 system over CAN bus, so the officer can take command, set engine speed and see alarms while docking or manoeuvring from the wing. Kongsberg environment-tested it for bridge wing consoles to IACS E10, IEC 60945 and IEC 60533.

Part of AutoChief C20, which Kongsberg declared obsolete in June 2025.
